Rheumatology

When To See a Rheumatologist

It can be difficult to suggest when a person should see a rheumatologists or a general practitioner since there are over 100 rheumatic diseases. The American College of Rheumatology suggests that if musculoskeletal pains are not severe or disabling and last just a few days, people may want to give the problem a chance to be resolved. However, if the pain in the joint, muscles or bones is severe or persists for more than a few days, they should seek medical attention.

Diagnosing rheumatic diseases can be difficult since they are not always easily identified in the early stages and may take years to fully develop and reach a proper diagnosis. Rheumatologists are specially trained to uncover the cause of rheumatic disease conditions such as swelling and pain the joints. Early detection and diagnosis is important in the early stages of rheumatic diseases in order to begin proper treatment. Musculoskeletal disorders respond to treatment best during this time.

Many people with rheumatic diseases will need to see a rheumatologist over an extended period in addition to their primary care doctor. Patients should visit their rheumatologist at least once a year for a regular check-up since rheumatic diseases often change or evolve over time. Examples of rheumatic diseases include:

  • Lupus
  • Rheumatoid Arthritis
  • Scleroderma
  • Sarcoidosis
  • Vasculitis
  • Osteoarthritis
  • Osteoporosis
  • Female Rheumatology Issues
  • Difficult Cases of Gout
